History
At St. Andrew's, we develop the children’s historical understanding through engaging and meaningful themes. We strive to develop the children’s historical knowledge with an understanding of how the past impacts upon the present. Their enquiry skills are developed through evaluation of evidence, logical thinking and working systematically to ask and answer questions.
In EYFS, the children are taught history as part of the ‘understanding the world’ aspect of the Early Years Framework. In the preschool and reception classroom the children learn about people’s lives in the past and their role in society and to compare the present to how things were in the past. The children in Key Stage 1 are taught to consider changes within living memory, events beyond living memory and the lives of significant individuals in the past. This is done through carefully chosen units that engage the children and make the learning accessible and relevant. In Key Stage 2, children develop their sense and understanding of chronology through local, British and world history.
Our historical units are carefully planned so that children gain a deep understanding of different periods, places and civilisations. Key vocabulary and chronological knowledge is embedded through the repeated delivery of concepts. Children use timelines in all topics to position their new learning in the correct placement of local, British or world history.
For pupils with additional needs, there will be every opportunity to work towards the overall objectives of the year group. Pupils may be supported with their historical learning through differentiated questioning, pre teaching with key vocabulary or adapted work. Historical class novels and narratives are also used to introduce and support their understanding of different times and ages. All pupils will have the opportunity to experience and be able to access the trips and visitors that enrich this subject, and high expectations will challenge all children to meet their personal targets.
