Geography

At St. Andrew’s CE Primary Academy, we believe that high-quality geography lessons inspire children to want to know more about the world in which they live, to ask questions about their surroundings and act as geographers. We want our children to embrace learning about changes in the physical and human environment and how their role in the protection of our planet is vital.

We equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying locations, places, human and geographical features and developing fieldwork skills. This seeks to deepen the understanding of the Earth’s human and physical forms and processes. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject. Geographical skills, including those of fieldwork and observational skills, are developed progressively within and across different year groups. Children’s knowledge will build sequentially, with a focus on children remembering more and applying their learning to other areas. Geography units will be enhanced by school visits, visiting experts and immersive experiences.

In EYFS, the children explore the natural world and are taught to identify similarities and differences between contrasting environments. The school ensures that children have the skills required for the KS1 programme of geography study. Key Stage 1 children are taught about their local environments, to be able to name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and to be able to name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans. The children in Key Stage 2 are taught about places in the United Kingdom, the wider world and how places relate to each other. We are blessed with our school grounds and local environment where the children can engage in practical geography activities, such as map and fieldwork.

For pupils with additional needs, there will be every opportunity to work towards the overall objectives of the year group. Pupils may be supported with their geographical learning through differentiated questioning, pre-teaching of key vocabulary, adapted work or additional time. All pupils will be able to access the trips and visitors that enrich this subject, and high expectations will challenge all children to meet their personal targets.
